The academic year in Germany is based on the semester scheme starting in April and October and running through the year with semester breaks and yearly breaks.


As applications and admissions to higher education in Germany are individualized to each institution, they handle it as per their standards; hence different institutions may have different requirements and different deadlines. So, it is advised that student planning to study in Germany starts to send the queries as early as possible i.e., 6-8 months prior to the proposed date of admission.

The Universities of Germany generally has two intakes throughout the year that is in April & October, however many universities also have multiple intakes of which the information has to be gathered through their official websites.

It is advised to the students to check with the universities for the deadlines of application officially by placing queries through emails, or on their official websites.

Most of the universities of Germany provide their application form through online, for which the requests have to be placed through email.


Bachelors in Germany

The basic requirements to study bachelor’s degree programs in German universities might change depending on the university you are applying. Aside from minor variations, these are the major requirements to apply for a bachelor’s degree in Germany such as High school qualification, your grades from previous education and entrance qualification.

Masters in Germany

The basic requirements for applying or for admission to a master’s degree in Germany are usually a relevant & recognized university degree (Bachelor’s or Diploma) with a least of 3.00 CGPA or an equivalent degree and it is necessary to meet the other relevant admission criteria set by the institution for the candidates.

Post Doctoral in Germany

To study Postdoctoral degree in German university requirements are slightly similar, thus a generalized list of requirements are mentioned here: Curriculum vitae,  outline of doctoral thesis and credits equivalency.

International students should prove that they have the financial means to support their expenses for living and study in Germany during their courses either through personal resources or external funding.

Students are also supposed to prove their English Language skills as per the requirements of the university and the courses that they opt for. And in some cases of chosen subject or language of instruction Language Skills in German must be proved.


German being the official language of Germany, most of the courses offered in German university is in German. A huge number of courses are also offered in English.

Students planning to study in Germany are supposed to prove their language skills in either English or German depending on their choice of subject and instruction language.

To prove one’s English Language Skills the students may take up Internet-Based TOEFL (IBT), Paper-Based TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Cambridge English: C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency, which are usually accepted by the universities in Germany.

To prove Language Skills in Germany one just has to take up tests like DSH, TestDaF, etc.

Students of the EU, EEA or Swiss will not be required to have a visa to study in Germany. But will be need of having a residence permit.

Only EU students are permitted to stay and work in Germany after the completion of their masters in Germany whereas Non-EU students can benefit from a generous immigration policy with the right to remain in the country for 18 months as a job seeker.

Students who are planning to work while studying need to have a work permit which will be valid for a duration of 2 years. With the work permit, a student can work for 20 hours a week in Germany.


It is mandatory for all the students to have health insurance coverage to study in Germany.

EU students can use Germany’s healthcare system as the nationals as long as they have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

Students from another country can also once check whether the health insurance of their home country is valid in Germany or not to apply for Germany’s health insurance policy.

There are two types of health insurance, namely: Public or Statutory health insurance & Private health insurance.


Though German universities provide the free cost of higher education, you will charge for enrolment, confirmation, administration, student’s governance and student services

For Undergraduate study in Germany you will be charged no more than €250 (~US$290) per semester, it varies depending on the university.

Postgraduate studies German public universities will be charging only €350 as semester fees. But still, private universities of Germany charge tuition fees ranging from €3,000 to €30,000.

Post Doctoral level of degrees you will need to make a semester contribution of €150-200. You might required to pay tuition fees for any extension period beyond the standard length for your PhD


Even though there is no need for paying tuition fees in Germany, as we all know Germany is one of the costliest places to live in the world. Hence students who are applying to study in Germany is supposed to prove that they have sufficient financial means to support their expenses for living an studying in Germany during their courses either through personal resources or external funding for getting admitted.

Germany also offers need-based and merit-based support available from the German Government to the students to cover their living expenses in Germany, during their study duration.

Hence it is advised that the students apply for the scholarships, fellowships, grants, or find other financial aids if there is a need.
