What is a Resume?

Resume, in simple term, means “to sum up”, a summary of educational backgrounds, abilities as a professional, hobbies, technological skills, etc.

It is a brief document, which summarises all education, work experience, accomplishments, skill sets & volunteering work of the candidates that are directly relevant to the desired job or posting, or professional course which is basically an educational course. The appearance of a resume is consistently changing.

The intention of writing a resume is to give a quick and relevant overview of the candidates’ qualities.

What is a CV?

Curriculum Vitae in simple term means “the course of one’s life”, a detailed document which highlights the professional and academic history.

CV typically includes information on every single work experience in details, achievements and awards, scholarships or grants that one has earned, & coursework, research projects, the publication of one’s work, etc.

What exactly is the difference between CV & Resume?

Actually, there is none! Yes! There is no difference among them in the present scenario, but they were once completely different documents. There was a time when a CV would contain complete biographical details of a candidate, but now, the digital age has bought in a lot of changes (Particularly European & International CV).

A CV and Resume, both are documents that summarize the professional history, education, skills and achievements of a candidate.

But it is important to note that in the US and most of Europe, Resumes & CV’s are not used interchangeably.

A resume is a shorter document that provides a concise overview of the candidate’s previous roles, skills & details about education whereas a CV is typically longer, and more detailed document, it majorly focuses on academic coursework & research.

In countries like Australia, India & South Africa, the terms CV and Resume are used interchangeably.

Should I use a Resume or a CV?


In the United States, Australia & Canada, a resume is the preferred application document. A CV is used only while applying for a job abroad or to search for an academic or research-oriented position.


In countries like the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, and the European Union, a CV is used in all contexts and there is hardly any usage of resume at all.

What is the European CV?

The European CV is a kind of extended resume and is not of a strict formal format as most of us believe.

Yes! The European version of a CV has a significant difference from US’s CV, in Europe CV is just another name for the formal or traditional resume, i.e. a typically short document that emphasizes on professional experience.

What do European countries look forward into a CV?

The rules for CV writing have substantially changed in Europe. The Europass CV is created, as a single format for CV writing across European Countries.
